Role purpose
As a trustee of Community Resource, you’ll play a key role in guiding the charity’s direction and ensuring we stay true to our mission.
You’ll provide strategic leadership and oversight, working closely with the CEO and leadership team to help us achieve our goals and deliver lasting impact.
Trustees take part in board meetings and may also contribute to subcommittees or working groups focused on areas such as finance, risk, events, and safeguarding.
You may also represent Community Resource externally, helping to build relationships with partners, supporters, and stakeholders and attend inspiring events that celebrate and support rural communities across Shropshire.
Requirements
We’re particularly keen to hear from individuals with current or recent senior-level experience in areas such as law, business accounting, IT, cybersecurity, health, or entrepreneurship. These skills are especially valuable as we navigate growth and innovation.
However, we also warmly welcome interest from those with other relevant expertise or lived experience that could benefit our organisation and enrich the board’s perspective.

Salary
Unremunerated, but reasonable expenses may be reimbursed.
Commitment
The board meets eight times a year, combining in person and online sessions (usually Tuesdays, 4– 7pm), including our AGM. Additionally, there is an annual trustee and leadership team away day.
Length of term
All trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years and are eligible to re-stand for election for up to a maximum of two subsequent terms.

The application process
Step 1
Submit your CV and a covering letter describing your rationale for applying and the skills you can bring to the role of trustee.
Step 2
Have an initial conversation with the CEO and/or Chair of the Board of Trustees.
Step 3
If both sides agree there’s a good fit, you’ll be invited to meet members of the wider board for an interview.
Step 4
The interviewing trustees will make a recommendation to the board regarding your appointment. You will receive a written response as to whether the board is proceeding with your application for joining the board and if successful, arrangements for your induction.
What to expect from your meeting with members of the board
This is an opportunity for trustees to get to know you, your motivation, experience, and what you’d bring to Community Resource. It’s also your chance to ask questions and find out what being part of our board is really like. These conversations reflect our commitment to open, inclusive recruitment and good governance.
What we’ll talk about with you
We’ll explore themes like:
motivation and fit: what drew you to Community Resource and how your values align with ours
- governance and strategy: your view of good governance and how trustees can drive impact
- skills and experience: what expertise you bring and how you’ve constructively supported leadership before
- teamwork and culture: how you approach collaboration and differing perspectives
- commitment and contribution: how you’d like to get involved beyond board meetings, and any support you might need to do so
Your Questions
We welcome your questions too, this is about mutual fit. You might want to ask about: board culture and dynamics, key strategic priorities or challenges, recent achievements and/or changes, and how trustees work with the executive team
After the Conversation
Trustees will reflect on the discussion and make a recommendation to the Board, considering values alignment, potential contribution, and the balance of skills across the team.

During recruitment we will collect and store personal information you submit to us via our application process. Please read the following privacy policy to understand how Community Resource uses and protects the information you provide. By submitting your personal information, you are consenting to Community Resource holding and using it in accordance with this policy.
1.0 Information that we collect from you
During our recruitment process you will be asked to provide certain information about yourself, including your name, contact details, and job history. Some of the information is mandatory in order for Community Resource to consider an application for a vacancy or meet its statutory monitoring and reporting responsibilities. However, some of the information is optional (where indicated) and you can choose not to complete.
2.0 How we handle the data that is submitted by you
Personal data is collected to facilitate the recruitment process and used for anonymised reporting purposes to our Board of Directors to ensure that we are reaching the widest pool of prospective candidates. In the event of your application resulting in the offer and your acceptance of a position at Community Resource, your personal information will be held in the Community Resource staff database.
2.1 Data Protection Legislation
Community Resource is your data controller. As your data controller Community Resource has notified its activities to the Office of the Information Commissioner as required under the Data Protection Act 1998 (the “Act”) and is listed in the Public Register of Data Controllers. Personal information will only be collected and/or processed by Community Resource in accordance with the Act.
2.2 Disclosure of your information
Except as set out in this policy or as required by law, your personal data will not be provided to any third party without your prior written consent.
2.3 Data Protection Statement
The personal data you provide in your application and as part of the recruitment process will only be held and processed for the purpose of the selection processes of Community Resource and in connection with any subsequent employment, unless otherwise indicated. Your data will be retained only for as long as is permitted by UK legislation and then destroyed.
By submitting your personal data and application, you:
(1) declare that you have read, understood and accepted the statements set out in this data protection clause;
(2) are declaring that the information given in the application is complete and true to the best of your knowledge, and understand that deliberate omissions and incorrect statements could lead to your application being rejected or to your dismissal;
(3) are giving your consent to the processing of the information contained in this application and any other personal data you may provide separately in the manner and to the extent described; and
(4) are authorising Community Resource to verify or have verified on their behalf all statements contained in this application and to make any necessary reference checks.
2.4 Data Retention
Unsuccessful applicant data will be held within the recruitment system for a period of twelve months before being destroyed in order that we can contact you if we have a further vacancy and we can respond to statutory reporting requests. Successful applicant data will be deleted within two years following the end of your employment with us.
