Health and Wellbeing Overview
We support people to stay active and connected to their communities and to maintain their health and independence so they live life to the full. We do this through a range of community-based projects with the help of a team of local and committed volunteers.
Hearing Loss Support
We provide information, advice and practical support to NHS hearing aid users in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
Our volunteers are trained by NHS Audiology Service and as most of them are hearing aid wearers themselves they know from personal experience about adjusting to a hearing impairment.
We can offer support through:
- home visits – someone will come and see you in your own home if you are housebound
- residential and care home visits – to provide help to individual residents
- our Hearing Loss Support Hubs – a pre-booked appointment at one of our regular hubs held around the county
- our Living Well with a Hearing Loss programme

Community Resource is a key partner in the delivery of the social prescribing service across Shropshire. Our Community Engagement Officers source a wide range of activities within the Community and Voluntary Sector, working closely with the local authority and NHS to support the wellbeing of patients throughout Shropshire.
What is social prescribing?
Social prescribing is a free and confidential non-medical service designed to help individuals with a wide range of social, emotional, or practical needs improve their overall health and wellbeing. It involves understanding the complexities of people’s lives and the inequalities they may face. It can help change the circumstances that make people unwell and empower people to manage existing health problems. It can help people to connect and to grow in confidence.
Social Prescribing can help if you;
- feel lonely or socially isolated
- are caring for someone
- feel low, stressed or down
- are living with a long-term health condition
- want to get involved with your local community
- need help accessing housing or financial advice
- want to change your lifestyle e.g. giving up smoking or losing weight

Find out more about social prescribingBuddy System
Our Buddy System pairs a volunteer with someone who feels isolated and alone, supporting them to take part in local activities, make new friends and get more active.
The support from a Buddy will enable participants to take a crucial first step to take part in something new. That encouragement and motivation will help reduce isolation and boost confidence and self-esteem.
How it works
Anyone who would like support from a Buddy needs to be referred to the service. Referrals can be given by organisations and individuals including community care co-ordinators, GPs, social workers, social care practitioners etc.
- we receive a referral for someone who needs help to be more active and who would benefit from having a volunteer Buddy.
- we contact them to find out their interests and what they would like to do. We then aim to pair them up with a Buddy who can support them to achieve this.
- their Buddy provides support for an agreed amount of time to help build confidence, working towards them being able to attend activities on their own.
All Buddies receive training and are DBS checked.

We run a number of groups for adults with additional needs that provide a place to socialise, get peer support and access information about other local services available.
Our current social groups are:
Care and Share (people with dementia and their family carers)
Our Care and Share groups offer a warm and welcoming place to socialise and make new friends for family carers and family members with mild to moderate dementia. Members can relax and mix with other people who have similar experiences of caring for a loved one with dementia or memory loss. Sessions are £6 per person, which covers the costs of activities and refreshments. Care and Share groups meet twice a month and are currently held in Market Drayton and Shrewsbury.
M&Ms (adults with disabilities)
The M&Ms is a social group for adults with disabilities that meets weekly in Shrewsbury. It provides accessible activities and a chance for people to get to know each other and learn new skills. Organised activities include arts and crafts, Boccia and trips out to local sights.
Sight Loss Opportunity Groups (adults with visual impairments)
Community Resource has three Sight Loss Groups: Ludlow, Shrewsbury, and Oswestry, which meet monthly (except December and January). The groups are open to anyone with a sight loss, aged 18 and over. They are a great way to connect with others in similar situations whilst finding out local information available to support you. Sessions are £2.00, including tea/coffee and biscuits. Find out when and where our groups take place on our events calendar.

Get in touchServing Families: On the Move
Serving Families: On the Move, is the support service for serving forces personnel and their families in Shropshire from Community Resource.
This support service for Armed Forces families has been made possible thanks to the Serving Families: On the Move programme 2025-26 funding from the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund.
The initiative recognises that military families face unique challenges when relocating, from finding appropriate housing and schools to accessing healthcare and building new social networks. Working with forces welfare teams, the project aims to create opportunities for increased integration by building stronger community links and improving access to existing services for newly arrived or relocated service families.
