Volunteering with Community Resource

Our volunteers play a vital role in helping us support people and communities across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin. We are grateful for the time, skills and commitment they bring, which make a real difference every day.
Whether you can offer a small amount of time or a more regular commitment, we welcome people who want to support their local community and help others.
We are currently recruiting for the following volunteer roles:
Buddy Volunteer
Purpose of the role
The Buddy Volunteer role supports adults who would benefit from help to access social opportunities, build confidence and feel more connected to their community.
Volunteers are matched with an individual for a set period of time. The aim is to provide encouragement and practical support so the person can become more independent and confident in taking part in activities on their own.
What you’ll do
- provide friendly support and encouragement to help someone engage with their community
- meet regularly for simple activities such as a coffee, a walk or attending local groups
- accompany individuals to hobbies and interests, such as art classes, social groups or clubs
- support people who would like to become more active, for example by attending exercise classes or walking groups
- help build confidence so that individuals feel able to attend activities independently over time
Skills and qualities we’re looking for
- confidence in meeting and talking with new people
- good communication skills
- a non judgemental and understanding approach
- reliability and the ability to keep to agreed arrangements
- an interest in supporting people from a range of backgrounds and experiences
- access to your own transport is helpful but not essential
Time commitment
This is a flexible volunteering role.
Meeting times and frequency will be agreed between you, the individual you are supporting and the Community Resource Project Officer. The role can fit around work, study or other commitments.
Support is time limited, usually around 6 to 12 sessions.
Location
We have various opportunities across the county. Activities take place in the local community, depending on the needs and interests of the individual.

Specifics
- you must be aged 18 or over, with no upper age limit
- a DBS check is required, although an existing check issued within the last three years may be accepted
- full training is provided, including safeguarding, professional boundaries and mental health awareness
- volunteers are covered by public liability and personal accident insurance while volunteering with us
- you will be asked to keep simple records of your sessions and any agreed expenses

Community Fundraiser Volunteer
Purpose of the role
To help raise vital funds for Community Resource by organising and supporting local fundraising
activities. Your efforts will enable us to provide essential services for people and communities across
Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
What you’ll do
- assist in planning and running community fundraising events such as coffee mornings,
quizzes, or sponsored walks - promote events through local networks
- encourage friends, family, communities and local businesses to get involved
- collect donations and ensure they are handled securely
- share ideas for new fundraising opportunities
Skills and qualities we’re looking for
- friendly and enthusiastic
- good communication skills
- organised and reliable
- enjoy working with people
- passionate about making a difference in your community
Time commitment
Flexible – you can give as much or as little time as you wish. Some activities may involve evenings or
weekends.
Location
The main location for fundraising and event planning will be at the Community Resource office.
4 The Creative Quarter, Shrewsbury Business Park, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, SY2 6LG.
Volunteers will also assist at events held in various locations across the community, so the role
involves some travel and flexibility to work “out and about” as event venues will change.

Care and Share Volunteer
Purpose of the Role
The Care and Share Volunteer role supports the delivery of a warm, welcoming dementia support group for people with mild to moderate dementia, alongside their families and carers. The aim of the group is to provide a safe, supportive space where people can socialise, make connections, and take part in enjoyable, stimulating activities.
What you’ll do
- help prepare the room before sessions and clear away afterwards
- support with serving refreshments
- welcome group members and help them feel comfortable and included
- engage with participants in light social activities such as board games, arts and crafts, reminiscence activities, quizzes, and music
- talk and listen to people with dementia and their carers in a friendly and respectful way
- encourage participation and help group members feel confident sharing their experiences
Skills and qualities we’re looking for
No previous experience is required. We are looking for people who are:
- friendly, approachable and patient
- good listeners who enjoy talking to people
- interested in supporting people living with dementia
- willing to learn about dementia and how it affects individuals
Time commitment
- regular attendance at sessions (frequency to be agreed locally)
- time to help set up and pack down before and after each session
Location
Care and Share groups are delivered in community venues across Shropshire. Specific location details will be provided when volunteering opportunities are discussed.

About the role
We’re seeking an armed forces veteran to support our Serving Families: On the Move project. It supports families new to the area, helping them feel welcomed, informed, and connected to life in Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.
Relocating can be challenging, and many families experience isolation or uncertainty, particularly when living outside the wire. As an Armed Forces Support Volunteer, you’ll help raise awareness of local support by representing the project at events and engaging with serving personnel and their families.
What you’ll gain

What you’ll do
As a volunteer, you’ll support the project mainly through events, engagement and awareness‑raising activities. This may include:
- assisting and attending community events aimed at supporting armed forces communities
- chatting with serving personnel and families about the project and what support is available
- sharing information about local groups, activities and services
- providing a friendly veteran presence to help people feel welcome and confident accessing support
- supporting staff with light practical tasks to help events run smoothly
Your involvement will vary depending on events, your availability and project needs, and will always be agreed in advance.
Time and location
- this is a flexible volunteering role
- events may take place across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin
- activities may include community events, outreach sessions or (with permission) visits to bases
- there is no fixed weekly commitment
Skills and experience
You don’t need specific qualifications or previous volunteering experience. We’re looking for people who are:
- armed forces veterans
- confident and friendly when meeting new people
- able to communicate clearly and approachably
- respectful, non‑judgemental and reliable
- happy working as part of a team
Access to your own transport is essential and will be required depending on event locations. All travel expenses are reimbursed.
Training and support
- mandatory induction covering safeguarding, professional boundaries, mental health awareness, lone-working and personal safety training
- role‑specific training to ensure volunteers feel confident supporting events and activities
- additional training will be available and signposted where appropriate
- guidance on recording hours, activities and submitting expense claims
- ongoing support and supervision from Valerie Graham, Project Lead
Additional information
- volunteers are covered by Aviva Insurance Ltd while volunteering
- volunteers must be 18+ (no upper age limit)
- a DBS check is required (or must already be held)
- volunteers are expected to follow Community Resource’s policies on health and safety, confidentiality and safeguarding
- volunteers do not provide home visits or transport
