Support for everyone using heating oil

Whether you are already a member of our Community Energy Group oil buying scheme or someone who uses heating oil independently, we understand that many households are feeling uncertain about the cost and supply of heating oil at the moment. Community Resource, together with our strategic partner NWF Fuels, is sharing practical tips and information to support all heating‑oil users. We encourage everyone to regularly check tank levels so you always have a clear idea of how much oil you have remaining.
Simple ways to make your heating oil last longer
Small everyday changes at home can help reduce energy use and make your heating oil last longer:
- Take shorter showers – you can request a free 4‑minute shower timer from Severn Trent Water (www.stwater.co.uk)
- Use a slow cooker, air fryer or microwave instead of your oil fired oven where possible
- Lower your thermostat by 1°C to help reduce heating costs
- Close curtains at dusk to keep heat in
- Use draft excluders around doors and windows
- Keep internal doors closed so heat stays in the rooms you are using
- Ensure radiators are not blocked by furniture so heat can circulate properly
- For older residents, the recommended living room temperature is 21°C. We can provide temperature cards if helpful
Support available
If you are worried about heating your home, we may be able to help. Community Resource has a grant fund available to support households experiencing fuel poverty or financial hardship. Applications must be made through a referral from a professional such as a GP, housing officer or Citizens Advice advisor. If successful, a grant may be awarded to help towards your fuel costs. Please ask about being referred to the Hardship Fund.
Join our Community Energy Group membership scheme
If you’re not already a member, joining our Community Energy Group membership scheme can help reduce the cost and stress of ordering heating oil. Members benefit from combined buying power, monthly order windows and support from local volunteer coordinators.
