Community Resource receives funding to boost falls prevention initiatives

We’re thrilled to share that Community Resource has been awarded just under £17,000 from NHS Charities Together to help support our falls prevention work across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.

The funding will enable Community Resource to deliver a series of Functional Fitness MOT and ‘Let’s Talk Falls’ events this year.

Functional Fitness MOTs invite attendees to complete a number of physical function tests to find out their fitness performance, covering areas such as balance, strength, and flexibility. The tests give people the opportunity to understand any issues they might be experiencing and discuss changes that can be made to their lifestyle.

Attendees also receive information on how to reduce the risk of falling – with a demonstration of how to get up from the floor after a fall – and a free exercise class taster. They leave with information on how to fall-proof their homes, a listing of activity classes in their area and a chair-based exercise booklet.

‘Lets Talk Falls’ events are shorter events that can be held in smaller, more rural community venues around the county. The two-hour sessions include a talk and film presentation on how to develop a personal Falls Plan, plus the demo and exercise taster.

Sue Chalk, Head of Service (Wellbeing and Care) at Community Resource, said: “We are immensely grateful to NHS Charities Together for supporting our falls prevention work. The funding will enable us to raise awareness about how to reduce the risk of falls, helping more people to choose healthy lifestyles and ultimately prevent them from getting injured and needing medical attention.

“It will also support us to reach people who live more rurally and that, due to a number of reasons, may have struggled to attend one of our larger events that we typically hold in market towns.”
