Meet the team strengthening community groups across Shropshire

At Community Resource, last year ended on a high note. We were proud to be awarded the Local Infrastructure Quality Accreditation (LIQA) from the National Association for Voluntary and Community Action. This is a nationally recognised quality mark that reflects excellence in supporting the voluntary and community sector.

It’s not an easy accreditation to achieve, and we’re especially proud to be the only organisation in Shropshire to hold it. For us, it’s more than a badge it’s reassurance that the support we offer is trusted, consistent, and making a real difference to charities, community groups, organisations and Community Interest Companies (CICs).

Supporting communities to thrive

Behind this achievement is our dedicated Voluntary and Community Support team, who provide a wide range of practical, joined-up support. Their work focuses on four key areas:

  • governance support
  • voluntary sector training
  • funding and grant advice
  • volunteer brokerage

By connecting these areas, the team helps organisations build strong foundations, make informed decisions, and grow sustainably. Whether it’s choosing the right structure, finding funding opportunities, or making the most of volunteers, support is always tailored to each organisation’s needs.

They also offer, personalised funding advice, and access to a bespoke voluntary sector training programme, helping groups plan not just for today, but for the future.

Meet the people behind the support

At the heart of this work is a passionate team: Duncan, Alex, Kelly, Nickie, Nat and Diane. Together, they deliver support across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, helping organisations feel confident and equipped to move forward.

Their support includes:

  • governance advice and volunteer brokerage
  • detailed funding application reviews
  • support for village halls and community buildings
  • guidance on accessing external grants
  • research and community engagement

Every conversation, workshop, or piece of advice is designed to give organisations clarity and confidence as they plan their next steps.

Strengthening local spaces and volunteering

Duncan and Alex work closely with local groups and CICs, helping them strengthen governance and recruit and manage volunteers effectively. Kelly offers funding and grant advice and support. With years of experience the team helps with policies, trustee roles and long-term sustainability planning. Collectively the team ensure no group, charity or CIC feels stuck or unsupported.

Village halls and community buildings are often the heart of rural life. Kelly is also the first point of contact for community building and village hall members, managing day-to-day enquiries and offering guidance on governance, trustee recruitment, succession planning and funding opportunities.

Tackling fuel poverty and supporting wellbeing

Nickie, our Affordable Fuel Project Officer, plays a vital role in supporting communities facing rising energy costs. She leads the Community Energy Group, Oil buying membership as well as managing the Household Support Fund and Warmer Winter Appeal. Nickie also provides practical advice on affordable energy solutions enabling local people to stay warm and well.

Connecting communities with research

Nat and Diane, our Research Engagement Network (REN) Coordinators, also known locally as Health and Care Research for All, help bridge the gap between communities and research.

They bring opportunities into local settings, connect voluntary groups and primary care with research teams, and ensure that local voices shape future health and care studies across Shropshire.

Here when you need us

We know that running a community group, charity or CIC comes with challenges. Having someone to turn to for guidance, reassurance, or simply a sounding board can make all the difference.

That’s why our team works alongside local people, understanding the realities communities face and offering support that’s practical, friendly and grounded in experience.
