Finding confidence through volunteering: Michael’s story

When Michael was referred to the Employability and Enterprise Programme by his Jobcentre work coach, he was facing a difficult period in his life.

After recently losing a close relative, Michael was struggling with his mental health and feeling unsure about his future. His confidence was low, and he found it difficult to communicate how he was feeling.

At first, Michael attended appointments with his mum, who provided reassurance and support while he began exploring his options. Together, they worked with the Employability and Enterprise team to identify opportunities that matched Michael’s interests, strengths and support needs.

Finding the right fit

Michael was keen to gain experience and build his confidence, but finding the right opportunity was important.

Although he initially considered volunteering in catering, previous experience showed that a kitchen environment was not the best fit for him. Instead of giving up, the team continued to work closely with Michael to explore alternative options.

Together, they identified an opportunity at Fordhall Community Land Initiative.

The role was very different from anything Michael had considered before. Working outdoors as part of a volunteer team offered the chance to learn new skills, meet new people, gain independence and spend time in nature.

It quickly became clear that he had found the right place.

Taking a step forward

One of the first signs of progress came when Michael felt confident enough to attend volunteering sessions independently.

Previously, he had always wanted his mum to attend appointments with him, but after settling into his new routine, he was happy to be dropped off for his volunteering sessions on his own.

It was a small moment, but an important one.

It showed growing confidence and independence, and marked the beginning of a positive new chapter.

Learning new skills and building confidence

Michael joined the regular Friday volunteer group at Fordhall Community Land Initiative in September 2025.

Since then, come rain or shine, he has attended every Friday, even during some of the most challenging winter weather. He has also volunteered at additional weekend events, demonstrating his commitment and enthusiasm.

Every week brings something different. Michael has taken part in a wide range of activities, including:

  • tree and hedgerow planting
  • repairing footpath stiles
  • laying new footpaths
  • putting up information signs
  • repairing the woodland roundhouse
  • fence repairs and maintenance

Along the way, he has developed practical skills, gained experience using new tools and techniques, and built confidence working as part of a team.

Reflecting on the experience, Michael said:

“I’ve learnt new skills, learning the ropes and learning how to work as part of a team.”

The physical nature of the work has also brought wider benefits.

Michael says volunteering has helped him feel healthier and fitter, while giving him the opportunity to spend time outdoors and try something new.

“It helps you change atmospheres and do something different, push yourself.”

A positive impact on wellbeing

For Michael, volunteering has become much more than a weekly activity.

He describes his volunteering days as “his days” – a chance to step away from worries at home and focus on something positive for himself.

Over time, the experience has helped him worry less and feel more positive about the future.

Week by week, his confidence has continued to grow, helping him feel happier, more capable and more optimistic.

Making friends and feeling part of the community

The social impact of volunteering has been just as important as the practical experience.

Through his time at Fordhall Farm, Michael has developed friendships and become a valued member of the volunteer team.

A member of the Fordhall Community Land Initiative team said:

“Michael has really settled into the group and started to develop friendships. I have seen his confidence gradually increase too. He happily gets stuck into any task and seems to really enjoy his time with us each week.

“During his time with us, Michael has been involved in many different activities and has developed skills and experience across a wide range of practical tasks. I certainly enjoy having him as part of the regular Friday team.”

His mum, Tracey, has also seen the difference volunteering has made.

“It has been the making of Michael.

“The number one thing is that he’s made friends. He talks about what he does at the farm when he gets home, and he only talks about things that he really enjoys.”

Looking ahead

Michael’s story shows how the right opportunity, carefully matched to an individual’s interests and needs, can have a lasting impact.

Through volunteering, he has gained new skills, built friendships, improved his wellbeing and developed greater confidence in himself and his abilities.

His journey is a powerful example of how personalised support and meaningful opportunities can help young people overcome challenges, discover their strengths and take positive steps towards the future.
